21-1 - Cancer Trends During the 20th Century
نویسنده
چکیده
Purpose: To review development trends and possible relations between different cancers in Sweden and in other countries to better understand causing mechanisms. Materials and methods: We used publicly available databases on cancer incidence and mortality to highlight trends and trend breaks. The data were used for correlation studies between different forms of cancers as reported from different counties within Sweden, and from other countries. Results: Some cancer forms correlate to malignant melanoma while others, like leukaemia, do not relate to melanoma at all. Asthma is a disease that has a sharp trend break just as these cancers show around 1955. Conclusions: There is a common environmental stress that accelerates several cancer forms such, as colon cancer, lung cancer, breast cancer, bladder cancer and malignant melanoma. Every effort should be taken to identify and eliminate this stress.

Trends in 20th century drought over the continental United States
[1] We used a simulated data set of hydro-climatological variables to examine for 20th century trends in soil moisture, runoff, and drought characteristics over the conterminous United States (U.S.). An increasing trend is apparent in both model soil moisture and runoff over much of the U.S., with a few decreasing trends in parts of the Southwest. The trend patterns were qualitatively similar t...
متن کاملClimate change and body size trends in aquatic and terrestrial endotherms: Does habitat matter?
Several studies have claimed that reduction in body size comprises a nearly universal response to global warming; however, doubts about the validity of this pattern for endothermic species have been raised recently. Accordingly, we assessed temporal changes in body mass for 27 bird and 17 mammal species, to evaluate if a reduction in body size during the 20th century is a widespread phenomenon ...
متن کاملEvolution of stratospheric temperature in the 20th century
[1] We employ a coupled atmosphere-ocean climate model to investigate the evolution of stratospheric temperatures over the twentieth century, forced by the known anthropogenic and natural forcing agents. In the global, annual-mean lower-to-middle stratosphere ( 20–30 km.), simulations produce a sustained, significant cooling by 1920, earlier than in any lower atmospheric region, largely resulti...
متن کاملTwentieth century Antarctic air temperature and snowfall simulations by IPCC climate models
[1] We compare new observationally-based data sets of Antarctic near-surface air temperature and snowfall accumulation with 20th century simulations from global climate models (GCMs) that support the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change Fourth Assessment Report. Annual Antarctic snowfall accumulation trends in the GCMs agree with observations during 1960–1999, and the sensitivity of snowfa...
متن کاملTrends in infectious disease mortality in the United States during the 20th century.
CONTEXT Recent increases in infectious disease mortality and concern about emerging infections warrant an examination of longer-term trends. OBJECTIVE To describe trends in infectious disease mortality in the United States during the 20th century. DESIGN AND SETTING Descriptive study of infectious disease mortality in the United States. Deaths due to infectious diseases from 1900 to 1996 we...
